Ah--yes... a game from when graphical development really mattered.

I remember owning the version of this for the SNES. Back when the Earthworm Jim franchise meant something. (This was well before Earthworm Jim 3d came out, proving that Rockstar Games requires hookers and crashing cars to be present to make a "decent" game).

The graphics they did for the first two EWJ series pushed what the SNES was capable for graphical composition at the time. It was truly revolutionary for its time. Though, I am certain that this sort of concept would still be revolutionary today...

I'm pretty sure that in the future, there will come a moment when developers realize that not every game needs 3d graphics, some games are just better in 2d. 3d is like any great leap forward in technology, it has instigated a fad of making all games 3d. When the fad subsides, people will realize that 3d is just a tool, like any other tool, that fits certain situations, and not others. But alas, so far too many bad 3d follow-ons to old 2d side-scrollers continue to be made.

but but! 3d means teh bettah graffix! I mean i looks at teh back uf teh game cover to mak surr dat da game has 3d graffix before I bi it!

In short--I agree whole heartly. There is still a lot that can be done with 2d graphics.

Though, this fad seems to have lasted a long time.

I mean, autotune has came, gone and reached equilibrium and we still have people talking about how much they love 3d graphics.

I like 3d graphics, but for a side-scroller for instance, or a shmup, 2d is the best, I think you could have some really extra-ordinary graphical quality 2d games with modern high-definition screens, beautiful, fully animated hand-drawn sprites with a high level of detail ftw. It doesn't mean I don't want 3d games, I just think there is still a market for high-quality 2d games.

@dowekeller that is why I said a key word in here "equilibrium".

3d is good--2d is good. When placed in the appropriate spots.

What is needed is.. well... equilibrium here. Which has not been gained yet.
